Chelmno is a small city but rich in precious monuments. Of particular interest is the medieval urban layout, buildings from the 13th century and almost the whole circumference of the city walls, one of the longest in Poland. The preserved urban layout dates back to the second relocation of the city in 1251.

At its centre is the rectangular Market Square – one of the largest in Poland. The width of the streets and the length and width of land plots is dictated with the help of the so called Chelmno Rod. The city walls which are 2270m long have been well preserved. Entrance to the city was through seven gates fitted with drawbridges. To date 23 towers have survived from the total of 27. The city hall in Chelmno was built originally in the 13th century and then rebuilt. It is one of the most valued examples of Polish renaissance.

The Museum of the Chelmno Lands is housed in the city hall. On the western facade of the building is an example of the old standard measuring tool as used by the Teutonic Order (the so called Chelmno Rod, 432.5cm long). Recently Chelmno has been promoted as the City of Lovers since one of its churches has relics relating to St. Valentine.
