These are the remnants after centuries of exploitation of iron ore and uranium from the 1920’s. The exploration and research mineshaft No. 9 of the uranium mine is open to visitors, which at the end of the 20th century was the training adit of Wroclaw Polytechnic. The “Skarbiec Walonow” and the water spring “Potencjalka” are some of the highlights along the tour.

FEATURES, ORIGINS, VALUES AND LEGAL PROTECTION
The Kowary Adit “Skarbiec Walonow” is an interesting tourist route, safe from radioactivity. It is perceived by tourists as an underground world of legends, mysteries and true history that is connected by over 800 years of searching for ores and minerals and the mining of iron ore, silver and, in the last period of operation of Kowary mine, uranium ore. It is one of more than twenty Soviet-Polish mines and R-1Centres which were involved in the exploration and acquisition of uranium ore and sending it to the Soviet Union which was intended for the production of the first Soviet atomic bomb.
After the end of mining operations an inhalation chamber was built for the Teplice Spa Resort, which enabled the use of radon treatment. It was one of three such inhalation chambers in Europe. After 1993 the adit was closed and only “treasure hunters” and their cousins the vandals entered the mine in search of easy loot and excitement. The tunnels and the mining equipment were devastated. The mine was prepared and opened for visitors to explore on 29th April 2000. The route is about 1200m of passageways, underground chambers and caves in which the treasures of the Walonow were accumulated as well as the artefacts relating to the mining of uranium ore. Secrets are waiting to be revealed among the nooks and crannies, the echoes of long past voices resound from the vaulted grottos. Sometimes Uranus and Pluto, good spirits of the mine, make an appearance only to disappear down yet unexplored passageways. Gentlemen and also ladies can test the waters of the “Potencjalka” Stream, which, according to legend, was a gift of nature for the Kowary miners left by the mythological Priap. We do not wish to reveal all the attractions awaiting visitors who wish to enter Mount Sulica but those requiring radon inhalation will be pleased to hear of the reactivation of this facility.
