Church of the Holy Spirit (Kościół św. Ducha)

General

Egységtípus:

The first Gothic wooden church was built here as early as the 14th century, along with an urban hospital.

The first Gothic wooden church was built here as early as the 14th century, along with an urban hospital, so it was a hospital's chapel. In the 17th century, a spiritual ministry was created by the Pauline monks. The current, impressive baroque church is reminiscent of the one built by the monks early in the 18th century: the church's designers were architects Józef Piola and Józef Szymon Bellotti. The Church was destroyed during the battles of the Warsaw Uprising in 1944, and in 1956, the monastery was rebuilt by reconstructing the façade of the Baroque saint statues, the  Baroque pulpit and the great altar. The church is adjacent to the smallest building in Warsaw. For nearly 300 years, in early August, the annual pilgrimage to Jasna Góra in Częstochowa (the most important Marian sanctuary in Poland and the most famous monastery of the Pauline monks) departs from in front of the church.
