Sobowice Peat Bog Nature Reserve

General

Egységtípus:

It covers 95.46 ha and protects a carbonate low peat bog with numerous higher calcareous points.

The Reserve is located six kilometres West from the centre of Chełm.

It is the only Chełm peat bog located within the Pagóry Chełmskie area, which is included (depending on authors) in Polesie Wołyńskie or Lublin Upland.

The peat bog lies in the Zawadówka Valley, surrounded with chalky hills of a relative altitude reaching 80 m.

Elution of calcareous rocks caused the surface layer of peat bog to be saturated with calcium carbonate and have alkaline reaction.

The reserve has outstanding natural assets, especialy in regards to the variety of butterfly species, which makes the area unique enev among other reserves around Chełm (Bagno Serebryskie, Brzeźno and Roskosz).
