FEATURES, ORIGINS, VALUES AND LEGAL PROTECTION
The filters are the oldest of the three Warsaw waterworks and have been supplying Warsaw residents with water since 3rd July 1886. Work on the construction of Warsaw’s water supply systems and filters started in 1881 according to a design by William Lindley. From the river pump station on Czerniakowski Street the water flowed through underground channels into the filters on Koszykowa Street. Here, underground, there were two major raw water strainers and six groups of slow filters. Water flowed here through layers of sand and granular activated carbon. The underground structure resembles a multi-chambered interior of a huge Gothic building, the vast brick chambers have vaulted ceilings supported by massive granite pillars.
Clean water tanks were also been built as well as a pumping station, administration and technical buildings and distinctive water tower.
The Lindley Filters, an assembly of rapid filters with a new approach, serve the city to this day.
