Aurelia Gold Mine

Gold mining in the area around Zlotoryja dates back to the second half of the 12th century. The largest gold mining boom was in the 12th and 13th centuries. The gold was extracted from the gold-bearing sands or by digging tunnels following the veins rich in gold dust.

FEATURES, ORIGINS, VALUES AND LEGAL PROTECTION
An example of this form of mining is the Aurelia Mine, where some of the corridors that were excavated around 1660, in the diabase rock under St Nicholas Mount, form the Underground Tourist Route. There are many secrets connected with the mine, during World War II, for unknown reasons, some of the corridors were closed off by cave-ins. It is also the reason why exploratory work is still being carried out to this day. In 1998, a further 27 metres of the “Karol” Mineshaft were discovered, which are not open to the public. Even though the tourist route is only about 100m in length, it creates a unique atmosphere which makes it particularly interesting for tourists. The Aurelia Gold Mine was opened to the public 1973.
