Polish Saint - Maximilian Maria Kolbe, before he died in KL Auschwitz (giving his life for another prisoner) was inprisoned by Nazists together with other priests in Stalag III B Amtitzt (nowadays village Gebice).
Nazi Germany isolation and war prisoners' camp Stalag IIIB Amtitz was founded in summer of 1939. Already in September the German imprisoned the first Poles here (civilians) and then after the battle at Bzura river also the Polish soldiers (POW) taken to bondage. On September 24th, 1939 a 600 people group was transported to Amtitz including 100 churchmen. Among them there was (till December 8th, 1939) Polish St. Francis brother from the monastery in Niepokalanów - Maximilian Maria Kolbe (future Polish saint). In October 1939, there were already 25 thousand of prisoners. The conditions were extremely cruel. The tortures, penalty drills, starvation have been used. In the mid October the camp was transformed to the gathering point for the compulsory (slave) workers from all over the Europe.
