Jews arrived to Knyszyn in XVI century. The idea of Zygmun August was the country governed with the princples of harmony and co-existence of different cultures, nationalieties and religious. His famous sentence" I am not a king of your conscience, reflects his beliefs and greater religious tolerance. Jews lived in Knyszyn until the Second World War. Many of them were the members of the town council. Before the war in Knyszyn lived about 4400 people nad one third of them there were Jews. On 2nd November 1942 Jews from Knyszyn were taken to Treblinka where they were murdered by Nazis. During one day Knyszyn lost one third its inhabitants.
