Sanktuarium Matki Bożej Łaskawej Patronki Warszawy

General

Egységtípus:

Particularly valuable is a miraculous portrait renowned for the graces of Our Lady of Grace, the Patroness of Warsaw; it was donated by Pope Innocent X to King Jan Kazimierz at the beginning of the 18th century.

It was built in the late-Renaissance style, between 1609-1629, the temple was constructed at the order of King Zygmunt III Waza. Later, the project was realized by Piotr Skarga. The late-Renaissance building delights with its stately dome and slender tower, but due to the close vicinity of the Cathedral, it sadly has somewhat less popularity among tourists.

During the Warsaw Uprising, the church was completely burned down, and its reconstruction lasted until 1957. In contrast to the neighbouring Cathedral, it was rebuilt in accordance with its pre-war appearance, in the renaissance form.

The stone bear lying in front of the church has a romantic legend connected to it: in this enchanted rock, a shy prince waits for the one woman whose love can restore him to manhood.

There is an Angel's Door, which was installed in 2009 and designed by famous sculptor Igor Mitoraj, it stuns with its image of the Virgin Mary and angels.
