St. Martin and St. Nicolaus Cathedral in Bydgoszcz

General

Egységtípus:

It is the oldest preserved Church in Bydgoszcz. The cathedral is a beautiful example of the Vistula Gothic. The oldest parts of the cathedral date back from the 15th century.

The inside of the cathedral with surprising colours covering the walls and ceiling is particularly worth seeing. Polychromies created in 1922-1925 by Henryk Jackowski have their roots in modernist Młoda Polska artistic movement. The cathedral’s interior is a mixture of gothic architecture, Baroque altars and chapels in astounding colours. There is an 18th century Holy Cross Chapel in the cathedral, a 16th century painting of The Virgin Mary with a Rose, a 17th century ambo, stall and a brass baptismal bowl. The cathedral is also a sanctuary where a precious painting of Virgin Mary of Sacred Love – the patron of the town and diocese - is located.
