Tarnów - "Pearl of Renaissance"
When you visit Tarnόw you will come across traces of many cultures. The old city takes pride in its renaissance town hall and its small town houses as well as its cathedral. In the cathedral you can see the renaissance complex of gravestones of the famous Tarnowski Family. Tarnόw is the home town of the national hero of the Hungarians and Polish alike – General Jόzef Bem. For centuries Tarnόw was a home to many Jews after whom many mementos still remain. These can be seen following the tourist walkways. Another colourful community which left many signs of its presence were the Gypsies. Their culture and history is presented in the exhibition, a one of its kind in Europe at the Ethnographical Museum. “Polish Edison” Jan Szczepanik the inventor of colour photography and the bullet proof vest is also connected with Tarnόw. In the restaurants and cafés you can try genuine blackthorn tea “Tarnina” from which the city gets its name.
