Bear Grotto in Zloty Potok

A prehistoric hunter’s camp of mammoths, rhinoceroses and other extinct animals from the Ice Age.

FEATURES, ORIGINS, VALUES AND LEGAL PROTECTION
The Bear Grotto is in the beautiful “Parkowe” Nature Reserve and located amongst rocks in the upper part of a hill. The cave has been known to man for thousands of years. Hunters have sought refuge here during the Stone Age in the Paleolithic Period whilst wandering around the area in search of their prey.
It was rediscovered and written about by Zygmunt Krasinski in 1857 when he was involved with the planning of the park. During subsequent excavations many remains of Ice Age animals were discovered, among them, those of mammoths, woolly rhinoceroses, reindeers and also cave bears which were also around at that time.
Currently, the Bear Grotto is the most visited cavern in the Janow District because of its horizontal layout of passageways, ease of access and proximity to the Red Eagles Nests Trail, so it is worth not to avoid this natural attraction.
